What does the term LEO mean in reference to communication satellites?

  1. ALow Energy Orbit, which conserves battery power
  2. BLow Elevation Orbit, which appears close to the horizon from the earth station
  3. CLow Equilibrium Orbit, which has a slightly unstable period
  4. DLow Earth Orbit, which has a period of around 100 minutes
Why LEO stands for Low Earth Orbit, meaning a satellite circling a few hundred kilometers up. At that altitude the orbital period is roughly 90 to 100 minutes, so the satellite crosses the sky in only about 10 to 15 minutes per pass and you get several usable passes a day. Most amateur satellites and the ISS are in LEO, which is why they need tracking software and why Doppler shift is noticeable.
Watch out The other expansions of the acronym sound plausible but are invented; low elevation refers to a satellite's angle above your horizon during a pass, not to the class of orbit.
