In what portion of the 630-meter band are phone emissions permitted?

  1. ANone
  2. BOnly the top 3 kHz
  3. COnly the bottom 3 kHz
  4. DThe entire band
Why The 630-meter band runs from 472 to 479 kHz, a slice only 7 kHz wide. Section 97.305(c) lists the emission types authorized on each band, and for 630 meters it authorizes CW, RTTY/data, phone and image across the whole allocation, with no subband split. So phone is legal anywhere in the band, subject to the 5 W EIRP power limit and the notification requirement in 97.303.
Watch out The choices offering only the top or bottom 3 kHz mimic the CW/phone subband structure of the HF bands like 80 or 40 meters, but the LF/MF bands have no such segmentation, and the answer of 'none' confuses 630 meters with the older days when the band was not allocated at all.
630 m = 472-479 kHz, just 7 kHz wide: too small to split, so all authorized modes go anywhere in it.

47 CFR 97.305(c) Authorized emission types.

(a) Except as specified elsewhere in this part, an amateur station may transmit a CW emission on any frequency authorized to the control operator.

(b) A station may transmit a test emission on any frequency authorized to the control operator for brief periods for experimental purposes, except that no pulse modulation emission may be transmitted on any frequency where pulse is not specifically authorized and no SS modulation emission may be transmitted on any frequency where SS is not specifically authorized.

(c) A station may transmit the following emission types on the frequencies indicated, as authorized to the control operator, subject to the standards specified in § 97.307(f):
